Gordon Bishop Loses Battle with Cancer

It is with deep sadness that we announce Gordon Bishop (Joyo) has lost his courageous battle with cancer. On Saturday, July 21, 2007, Joyo passed away at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York.

On behalf of Joyo and the Joyo Indonesia News Service staff, we'd like to convey our heartfelt gratitude to all the subscribers who have expressed their support and love for Joyo over the course of his battle with cancer. Those many messages not only comforted him, but contributed to the fighting spirit that prolonged his life.

After the tragic loss of his beloved wife in a 1993 car accident, Joyo had to leave Indonesia for surgery in the United States. Beginning with emailing from his hospital bed, Joyo founded Indonesia's first online news service in 1996.

Today it is read by thousands, including journalists, academics, government officials, NGOs, human rights organizations, and embassy officials throughout the globe for the latest news and analysis about Indonesia.

In 2005, Joyo received the Indonesian Alliance of Independent Journalists' annual Suardi Tasrif Award, presented to individuals or institutions considered to have contributed to freedom of speech or access to information.

For Joyo, the news service was much more than a way of keeping subscribers around the world informed about Indonesia in all of its vast complexity: It was a way for him to stay connected to the people and country he loved...and missed...so much.

Finally, Joyo expressed his wish that the news service continue in the event of his death. The Joyo Indonesia News Staff will fulfill that wish, continuing the same high standards that he always demanded.

Sincerely,

JoyoNews, JoyoNews2, and the staff of Joyo Indonesia News Service
